Yosemite - May 2003

On May 1-4, Patty and I camped at Wawona Campground, south of Yosemite. Although we had wet weather almost all the time, we had a great time enjoying the peace & quiet and each other's company as well as the beauty of the Sierra.

Here's a view of mirror lake.

That night, as we drove back to the campground, we got a nice view of the valley as the sun was setting. There was just enough break in the clouds to make it interesting.

Of course it poured all night and all Saturday morning. We decided to check out the Mariposa Grove of giant Sequoias. The road to the grove was closed because of snow, so we decided to walk it. My tennis shoes had dried out overnight, but they quickly got soaked through as we walked through the rain and snow. When we got to the parking lot for the grove (2 miles up the road) it was snowing pretty hard as you can see.

We trudged on to see the "Grizzly Giant" sequoia. It was an impressive tree. That's me in the foreground. This is one big tree. It's 2700 years old!

Here's the base of the tree through a very wet lens. Realize that you're looking at about 30 feet vertically in this shot.

That night we headed back to camp and had no rain after about 5:00. It was really nice to be able to spend a few minutes outside and dry. This is our campsite with the river behind us.

Here's Patty's shot of the river right beyond our campsite (it was quite loud in our campsite - which was great - when we could hear it over the sound of the raindrops).

And here's Patty taking the previous shot.
